Ratan Kahar on Badshah's Genda Phool "Never Got Any Recognition, It Pains Me A Lot"
Ratan Kahar, who is in his 70s lives in Birbhum in West Bengal, claimed that he wrote the beautiful song but never got any recognition for it. Although, His song has been recreated in the past as well. Punjabi Rapper Badshah’s new music video Laal Genda Phool has landed in a credit controversy with Bengali folk artist Ratan Kahar alleging that his lyrics were used in the song without any credit given to him.
The music video, starring bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez, is among the top trends on YouTube but a section of social media users have pointed out how come the song does not mention Ratan Kahar. However, those in support of the rapper told that the Bengali verses are part of the whole composition. And They argue that the original lyrics of Lal Genda Phool were taken from a Bangla folk song. And it was mentioned in the credits of the video, which went live on YouTube in March 25.
“The lyrics of Genda Phool song were written by me and music composition was also mine. But I never got any recognition for the song and it pains me a lot. I am Ratan Kahar, who never got recognised for this song. You judge, what kind of justice is that,” Kahar told the reporters.
Alongside, The folk artiste Ratan Kahar appealed to writers and literary personalities to protest against the plagiarism of boro loker beti lo lomba lomba chul song.
“There are so many writers and good people around us but nobody protested for it. Those singing the song don’t understand its spirit and ruining its earthiness,” he added. Ratan Kahar said he first got to know that his song was used in the music video after a theatre personality showed him the video. “I was aghast. Will these things continue?” Ratan Kahar asked.

Badshah and Jacqueline Fernandez along with Payal Dev released a new video song Laal Genda Phool, which is originally written by Ratan Kahar. The song has a distinct folk melody fused with uber urban sounds. While the Genda Phool song has already garnered more than 100million views on YouTube, it has also been marred by plagiarism allegations.
The song has a line “Borlok er Bitilo, lomba lomba chul…..lal genda phool”, which will remind you of the original bangali folk song Borloker Bitilo. The Bengali folk song was originally written by Ratan Kahar, but not given credit in the music video. It has violated the Indian Copyright Amendment Act of 2012. Recently, Ratan Kahar’s house was demolished because he didn’t have money and now he is living in a temporary house in West Bengal. Ratan Kahar’s song Boro Loker Biti was first sung by singer Swapna Chakaraborty back in 1976. They made a lot of Bengali films and music video together, but credit always went to her and not Ratan Kahar. Surprisingly, The song also won the Golden Disk award.
He has also sung in Kolkata’s Akashvani radio station. After that, Ratan Kahar began working with Akashvani under the supervision of Pahari Sanyan. Ratan Kahar said many singers and lyrics have become famous and have made money out of his songs. But he stayed in darkness without due credit.
Badshah Responds To 'Genda Phool' Controversy: He's Trying To Reach Ratan Kahar
Thankfully, a popular YouTube channel name of “Infinity Waves Production” released a short documentary on the tragic life of Ratan Kahar. It highlighted his super talent, his contribution to folk music, and his inability to legally charge those who have stolen his lyrics and his music.
This initiated a backlash against singer Badshah as many netizens urged him to credit Ratan Kahar because that’s the least he could do with his ability. I seriously didn’t expect it to have an impact cause what’s done is done. I was pretty sure that Badshah is going to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to all this noise and cruise through the revenue he’s getting from ‘Genda Phool’ song. But surprisingly, Singer Badshah responded with an Instagram post.
He said,
“We had however, done our due diligence before releasing the video song. And nowhere on any copyright societies or on any of the previous reprises/versions of the Genda Phool song was Mr. Ratan Kahar credited as lyricist. Information all across say that ‘Boro Loker Beti Lo’ is a top traditional/folk song from the Bauls of Bengal. Just for your general information, traditional songs are open for recreation/reprises/sampling globally.”
Badshah further said,
“After receiving so much information from the Bengali community/internet, I have been constantly trying my best to connect with him and reach out to him. And be able to do justice to the situation to all my might. However, the lockdown siuation in India has not been very helpful, it has been very difficult to get through to the village that Shri Ratan Kahar is in but I am still trying. I urge and request any of the well wishers who have been speaking on his behalf, to help me connect with him quickly so that I can do whatever possible on my part on humanitarian grounds to put this right.”
That’s absolutely cool.
And here’s the thing. There are many legal loopholes that can be used to take full advantage of folk singers. Because, they aren’t technically looking to monetise their songs. They’re doing because of their immense passion for the art-form. It’s not much idealistic. But it is what it is. So, it’s great if people realize that. I can’t forgive him the cultural appropriation in his music video and the awful lyric-writing. However, I can surely laud him for making this gesture of reaching out to Ratan Kahar. The lockdown in India due to the Coronavirus outbreak is an issue but it is temporary. So, I expect that once it’s lifted, Badshah will stay true to his word and will help Ratan Kahar to get the recognition he should have received years ago.
